Girls Soccer: Monarchs improve to 2-1 with 3-1 win over Missouri Valley
Denison-Schleswig were back in action on Friday against Missouri Valley at the Denison Field Turf. 5 saves from Sam Chandler and two second half goals including a go ahead goal from Jimena Lupian would give the Monarchs a 3-1 win and move to 2-1 on the year.
Missouri Valley scored on a counter with 32:11 remaining in the 1st half. D-S was
pushed up for an attack and MV had a steal and quickly got the ball across midfield. MV played
the ball wide on the right wing and centered the ball back for a wide open 10 yard shot on the
right post that she finished in the left side net.
Janet Castillo tied the game at 1-1 with her 2nd goal of the season, assisted by Karla
Sanchez (2nd assist of the season) with 4:39 remaining before halftime. Karla received a ball
near the right corner, got by one defender and dropped a pass to Castillo 20 yards out. Castillo
received the pass and hit a shot from 18 yards out that the MV goalkeeper got her hands on, but
the ball went off her fingertips into the back of the net. A weird scenario happened with about 5 seconds left before halftime. Denison had the ball near the right sideline and centered a pass into the box. An inadvertent whistle was blown while the pass was in the air, which made MV stop playing. Denison’s Libby Leon put the pass into the goal, but it wasn’t allowed due to the inadvertent whistle.
Jimena Lupian scored the go-ahead goal, her 1st goal of the season, assisted by Libby Leon
(1st assist of the season) with 25:09 remaining in the match. Leon took a corner kick on the left
corner and sent a perfect pass into the center of the box where Lupian scored on a header from
6 yards out.
Karla Sanchez scored her 2nd goal of the season, assisted by Libby Leon (2nd assist of the
season) with 7:42 remaining in the match. Rosy Segoviano drew a foul 25 yards from the goal,
so D-S had a free kick. Leon did a great job of playing quickly and took the kick right away.
Leon placed a ball over MV’s wall and came down 3 yards from the goal. Sanchez volleyed the
ball out of the air and 1 touched the ball into the goal.
Comments by Coach Eller: “We played really well, but especially in the 2nd half. We controlled
the 1st 7 1⁄2 minutes of the game and created several shots, but couldn’t get any of them to go
in. Missouri Valley had a great counter with pinpoint passing and converted a goal on their first
opportunity and probably their first possession past the midfield line. Between that and the goal
that wasn’t allowed right before halftime, there were some things that could have gotten us off
track and off focus and we could have let those things bother us. We got to halftime and I let
the girls talk first. It’s like they were inside my brain because everything I wanted to talk about
was what the team said. So, we went out in the 2nd half and played great soccer. We created
a bunch of chances and got 2 to go in. All of our assists, 2 by Libby and 1 by Karla, were perfectly placed passes. We talked about not letting corner kicks get by us, and Jimena finished a great pass with a header. Karla hustled and got to another great pass before their goalkeeper could get to it and hit a great volley into the goal. Karla and Janet connected on a goal on a passing pattern that we work on regularly in practice, so that was great to see that work pay off in a game. Defensively, Xochi Arellano did a great job of marking up their leading scorer and not allowing her a goal tonight. Jimena Lupian, Jocelyn Serrato, Leilany Carrazco and Leilany Morales did a great job getting all of their counters stopped while also regularly maintaining our possession with good passes to our open players. Missouri Valley has a talented team with a lot of speed in the forward and midfield positions. I’m very pleased with how well we worked together tonight as a team”.
The Monarchs are back in action at home on Monday against Riverside (1-1-2).
