Girls Soccer: Monarchs fall in Hawkeye X opener

On Tuesday. Denison-Schleswig hit the road to Iowa Western Community College in conference play agasint St. Albert. Led by a strong first have from the Saintes, despite 25 saves from Sam Chandler, St. Albert would get the best of the Monarchs 4-1.

Denison fell behind 3-0 in the 1st 17 minutes of the match. Denison cut the score to 3-1 on a goal by Janet Castillo (1st goal of the season), assisted by Xochitl Arellano (2nd assist of the season) with 23:34 remaining in the match. Arellano took a free kick from 54 yards out following a foul on a St. Albert midfielder. Arellano put the ball over the top of the St. Albert defense and Castillo beat the St. Albert defenders to the ball on the right wing. Castillo put a shot just inside the right post from 10 yards out.

Comments by Coach Eller: “First and foremost, St. Albert has a great soccer team. They have
speed at all levels, great touch and possession which leads to great ball movement, and they
have girls at forward and midfield who can create off the dribble and finish. This was a very
tough matchup and I think they can make a deep run towards the state tournament this season.
St. Albert has several girls who play club soccer and they have a lot of great athletes from their
state champion basketball team. They dominated the first 17 minutes and we made some key
mistakes that led to their 1st 3 goals. We had a ball stolen from us that led to a 1 on 1 shot, we
didn’t mark up the player who took the corner kick giving her an uncontested cross from short
range and we allowed them to complete a 30 yard pass right down the middle of the field to their
best scorer, who got around a couple defenders for a shot. However, the last 63 minutes of the
game we played that great team to a 1-1 tie and it wasn’t because they subbed their starters
out. We made good adjustments defensively, stayed more connected in the middle, and took
away their easy shots. We defended their corner kicks much better than we did earlier in the
game. Offensively, we did a better job of possessing the ball and getting the ball up top on
counters. But, whenever we countered their possessions they had 6 players get back so quickly
that we had a hard time getting shots off. Tonight was one of those games that was tough at the
moment, but will be good for our team to prepare for the rest of the season”.

Denison falls to 1-1 this season and 0-1 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. The Monarchs will have their home opener on April 4th vs Missouri Valley.
