Restoration Effort Underway for Iconic Roadside Art South of Dunlap, Iowa

Dunlap, IA – A beloved piece of roadside art south of Dunlap, Iowa, is getting a second chance at life, thanks to the efforts of local community member Mike "Space" Schwery. The 16-foot tall sculpture, titled "Little Girl with Torn Teddy Bear and Dalmatian," has stood in a field since its installation in 1999. Created by artist John Cerney, this unique piece has attracted visitors over the years but has unfortunately fallen into a state of disrepair.
The sculpture, which once stood proudly as a symbol of creativity and nostalgia, was recently taken down for preservation. Schwery is now leading the charge to restore and rebuild the piece, with the goal of bringing it back to its former glory for future generations to enjoy. However, Schwery will need to find a new location for the sculpture, and the specific location is still pending.
Special thanks are being extended to Denny and Lori Topf for their generosity in allowing Schwery to retrieve and secure the artwork, as well as to Tony Casperson for providing storage support during this critical phase of the project.
In an exciting development, Schwery has been in contact with the original artist, John Cerney, who resides in California. Cerney has expressed his willingness and ability to recreate the sculpture's dog and girl figures, a key component of the restoration effort.
Schwery is calling on local residents and supporters to help fund the project or offer any other form of assistance. Those interested in getting involved are encouraged to reach out to Schwery directly or send a private message for more information. The project’s success may also hinge on community support, as ex
As this effort gains momentum, Schwery hopes to see the iconic sculpture restored and relocated to a new pending location near Dunlap, continuing to capture the hearts of visitors and residents alike.
