Carroll Downtown Businesses Escape Major Fire After Electrical Malfunction Friday Night

A fire call in downtown Carroll on Friday evening caused temporary disruptions to local businesses but fortunately resulted in no injuries. The Carroll Fire Department responded at around 5:35 p.m. to a report of a “hot smell” coming from multiple businesses on the west side of the 500 block of N. Adams Street. Fire Chief Dan Hannasch confirmed that when crews arrived, no visible flames were found. However, they quickly traced the source of the odor to an electrical problem that had generated significant heat in three nearby stores—Buckle, Brown’s Shoe Fit Co., and Glik’s.

To prevent further risk, firefighters shut off power to the affected buildings. Electricians worked through the evening and into Saturday to rewire the electrical systems and isolate the issue, ensuring the businesses could safely reopen. Chief Hannasch noted that it was fortunate the problem was identified before the stores closed for the night. Had the issue been left unchecked until later, it could have developed into a larger fire, potentially affecting multiple structures.

By Sunday, all three businesses were able to resume normal operations.
