Sac County Man Sentenced To 15 Years In Federal Prison On Drug/Firearms Charges
(Carroll Broadcasting) – 34 year old Edwin Diaz of Odebolt has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison on drug trafficking and firearms charges. Carroll Broadcasting reports that according to court records from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, Diaz was sentenced on Friday to 185 months of incarceration. Diaz, who had previously been convicted of felony theft, burglary, and possession of a controlled substance, was found guilty on Feb. 9 of two counts of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and one count of prohibited person in possession of a firearm. In the early hours of Dec. 31, 2022, an Ida County Sheriff’s Deputy discovered 45 grams of methamphetamine and 35 grams of marijuana in Diaz’s vehicle during a traffic stop. Evidence later showed Diaz coerced a passenger to falsely confess to owning the drugs. A subsequent search of Diaz’s residence revealed more drugs, drug trafficking paraphernalia, a Ruger .22 rifle, and ammunition. Following Diaz’s prison term, he must complete four years of supervised release. The Ida County Sheriff’s Office, Sac County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Laboratory, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) assisted in the investigation.
