Carroll Man Charged After Fatal Crash Near Halbur

A Carroll man is facing felony charges after allegedly fleeing the scene of a deadly crash Monday night that claimed two lives and critically injured another.
The Iowa State Patrol reports the crash happened around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of 220th Street and Hawthorne Avenue near Halbur. Authorities say 51-year-old Troy Bluml was driving a John Deere tractor eastbound on 220th when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign. The tractor entered the intersection and struck a northbound 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe on the driver's side.
The SUV was driven by 17-year-old Elvin Ariel Murillo Castro of Carroll. He and a passenger, 56-year-old Pedro Castro, died at the scene. A second passenger, 24-year-old Carlos Castro, was flown to UnityPoint Hospital in Des Moines with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators say Bluml left the scene but was later found at his residence along with the tractor. He was arrested and booked into the Carroll County Jail early Tuesday on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident — a class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
