Crawford County Wellness Center Gets $4.5M Destination Iowa Grant

Another piece of the Crawford County Wellness Center funding puzzle fell into place this week.
Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Economic Development Authority awarded a $4.5 million grant to the City of Denison for the project. Chairman Tim Stuart told KDSN this week that the Wellness Center Committee hopes to include grants in about one-third of more than $18 million in total cost.
“We have made some serious progress and that was needed based on some of the potential grants that were out there. Millions of dollars that we’re trying to bring back to western Iowa in order to get this transformational project and facility built,” said Stuart.
Stuart says he expects the city council to formally take ownership of the future facility soon.
“Based on the feedback that I’ve received they’re going to take action at their next meeting on a resolution so there’s agreement within the council that the next step needs to be taken,” said Stuart.
The award announced by the state on Thursday is part of the final round of Destination Iowa grants which will help with a total of 46 projects. The Crawford County Wellness Center is among the latest $15 million awarded to rural projects that did not receive grants in previous rounds.
