Red Cross Response to Northwest Iowa Flooding Update

Red Cross Response to Northwest Iowa Flooding Update

JUNE 24, 2024 — Since flooding began in Northwest Iowa on Friday, Red Cross volunteers have mobilized to provide vital care and comfort to those affected. The Red Cross plays a critical role in helping families and communities recover in the days, weeks and months after a disaster.

The Red Cross is managing or supporting six shelters in Northwest Iowa:

    • Faith Reformed Church, 1305 7th Street, Rock Valley, IA 51247
    • Trinity Christian Reformed Church, 2020 8th Street SE, Rock Valley, 51247
    • Faith Pentecostal Church, 1700 11th Avenue SW, Spencer, IA 51301
    • CrossWinds Church, 1900 Grand Avenue, Suite A, Spencer, IA 51301
    • River Valley Community School, 916 Hackberry Street, Correctionville, IA 51016
    • Cherokee Washington High School, 600 West Bluff Street, Cherokee, IA 51012

Volunteers are on site at these shelters to welcome people who have been displaced from their homes, providing a safe place to stay, meals, snacks and comfort kits, while addressing other immediate needs. Shelters are open to everyone.

Since the onset of the flooding, there have been more than 960 overnight stays in shelters managed or supported by the Red Cross.

In the initial aftermath of a disaster, the Red Cross focuses on providing shelter and meals to affected residents. When it is safe to do so, Red Cross volunteers will assess the residential damage in impacted communities. This work will help to better understand what help families may need in the coming days and weeks.

The Red Cross remains in contact with local officials across the impacted areas to evaluate the needs of the residents. This is a quickly evolving situation, and the Red Cross is prepared to adapt to provide the necessary care and comfort in the affected communities.

Residents affected by the storms can receive assistance by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The free Red Cross Emergency app can be downloaded for weather alerts, open Red Cross shelter locations and safety steps for emergencies such as flooding.
