Comments by Coach Eller: “We had our 1st really windy game of the year, and it did affect us.
We went into a 20-30 mph wind in the 1st half and just really struggled to move the ball quickly.
Our players were timing their runs perfectly, but for some reason the ball got stuck at our feet
from the passers and we were called for 3-4 offsides in the first half. Every one of those
mistimed passes cost us a chance at a 1 on 1 with their goalkeeper because Creston played
their back line up really high. We also created 2 or 3 great opportunities, but we kicked the ball
right to their goalkeeper from close range. The wind was just too strong to get a shot to go in
from outside of 15 yards and they did a good job of packing the box when we had the ball in
their defensive third. Every shot that we took from 15 yards out or further hung up in the wind
and their goalkeeper was able to catch all of them. In the 2nd half, we had the wind at our back
and created a lot of shots, but many of our shots were off target. We missed out on some
chances for breakaways on our counters because we struggled passing the ball through the
gaps in their defense. We went sideways well, but we didn’t pass forward through balls well
enough to create 1 on 1s. Thankfully, we got to 2 of their numerous goal kicks and had 2 great
shots from 18-20 yards out to get our last 2 goals. Our starting defense did a great job of
shutting down their scoring chances. When I substituted, Creston was able to create scoring
chances. Our backups need to continue to become more aggressive in stopping the ball and be
proactive instead of reactive. Sam had a couple of really nice saves when she did get to face
shots. It is a good conference win, but we all know we didn’t play our best game”.
