Harlan Community Theater Brings Emotional Depth to the Stage with The Last Five Years

(Interview with Lead Actor Eric Pahnisch Highlights the Story Behind the Show below this article)
The Harlan Community Theater is preparing to open its spring production of The Last Five Years, a deeply moving and unconventional musical written by Jason Robert Brown. Opening Friday, April 25, this acclaimed two-person show explores the rise and fall of a relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, an ambitious novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress—told through a unique structure where Jamie’s story unfolds forward in time, while Cathy’s is told in reverse.
In an interview with KDSN’s Mick Tisone, actor Eric Pahnisch offers insight into his portrayal of Jamie, a character both charismatic and flawed. “Jamie is complex,” says Pahnisch. “He’s passionate and driven, but struggles to see beyond his own success. It’s been a powerful role to take on.” The conversation delves into the emotional nuances of the show, the challenges of performing in such an intimate format, and the chemistry required to bring this story to life on stage.
The show will be performed across multiple venues in the area, including IKM-Manning High School Auditorium on April 25 and 26 at 7:00 p.m., Boyer Valley High School Auditorium in Dunlap on April 27 at 7:00 p.m., and at the C.G. Therkildsen Activity Center in Harlan on May 2 and 3 at 7:00 p.m., with a matinee on May 4 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available at wiaa.ludus.com or in person at CoffeeGirl, Milk & Honey (Harlan), The Market Place (Manning), and at the door.
