Man Allegedly Run Over and Killed by Driver Who Fled Scene in Cherokee County

Officials in Cherokee County are investigating a suspected homicide after a man was allegedly run over by a vehicle early Monday morning, April 21.
According to a release from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in around 12:30 a.m. reporting that a person had been run over at a farm site east of Cherokee. The caller also told dispatchers the driver fled the scene.
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures on the victim, identified as Christopher Wheeler, but he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
The investigation led authorities to identify the suspected driver as Richard Hammond. He was later located and taken into custody. Hammond has been booked into the Cherokee County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
The case remains under investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. No further details have been released.
