Stolen Truck Pursuit Ends with Arrest in Missouri Valley

A lengthy and unusual vehicle pursuit through multiple jurisdictions came to a close Monday after law enforcement detained a suspect in Missouri Valley.

The incident began in Council Bluffs when a red dump truck pulling a skid loader was reported stolen from the 2000 block of 23rd Avenue. Council Bluffs Police quickly responded, joined by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol. The suspect fled eastbound toward South Expressway, sparking a pursuit that spanned city streets, highways, and rural roads.

Throughout the chase, officers tracked the vehicle as it wound through various areas of Council Bluffs, including Main Street, 8th Avenue, Voorhees Street, and Bluff Street. The suspect drove at varying speeds, sometimes as low as 5 mph and reaching up to 50 mph, often running stop signs and narrowly missing obstacles. At one point, the vehicle cut through apartment complexes and crossed multiple intersections, including the area near the Council Bluffs Library.

Law enforcement utilized tire deflation devices (commonly referred to as "stop sticks") near 8th Street and Mynster Springs Road, which successfully damaged the vehicle's tires. Despite the damage, the truck continued northbound at reduced speeds, struggling mechanically and eventually limping along at just 8 mph.

As the pursuit moved north of Crescent, Iowa, the vehicle lost additional tires and sustained further mechanical issues. The chase continued through rural stretches along Old Lincoln Highway, with stopsticks deployed by Missouri Valley officers. The suspect was reportedly down to two trailer tires before attempting to reverse direction near Page Lane.

The pursuit reached the outskirts of Missouri Valley, crossing into Harrison County. A local deputy took over the lead as the truck passed the Missouri Valley Airport and entered the city. The suspect navigated through residential streets before finally coming to a stop near the intersection of North Willow and the city’s bridge area.

The driver was taken into custody without further incident. Law enforcement confirmed the individual was read their Miranda rights at the scene. The patch between local and state agencies was removed shortly after the arrest.

No injuries were reported, and authorities have not released the name of the suspect or details regarding charges at this time.
