Chuck Long, College Football Hall of Fame quarterback.

In 1979, coach Hayden Fry took over a University of Iowa football team that had suffered decades of losing. One of his early recruits was quarterback Chuck Long from a Chicago suburb, who quickly led the team to national prominence including five successive bowl games and a #1 national ranking. By the end of his college career, Long held virtually all the Hawkeye passing records and had thrown for more yards than any other quarterback in Big Ten history. His greatest season was 1985 when he won the Maxwell Award, the Davey O’Brien Award, and was the Big Ten’s MVP and a unanimous All-American. That New Year’s he played his second Rose Bowl and in 1986 was recruited in the first round by the Detroit Lions where he spent most of his seven-year NFL career. He has coached at all levels, has served as a Big Ten Network analyst, and is currently the CEO and executive director of the Iowa Sports Foundation. In 1999 he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
