Comments by Coach Eller: “Congratulations to the Lady Monarchs on an exceptional win! The
records on Bound go back to 2011 and Denison hadn’t beaten Glenwood in girls’ soccer since
before 2011!! Glenwood has a great team with a lot of speed - they share 9 varsity players who
are out for soccer and track. I would assume several of their players will be running in the state
track meet. Glenwood does a great job of possessing the ball and creating shots. We got the
shutout with a combination of some great saves by Sam and Jimena, dodging a couple bullets
and mostly by playing very good defense with marking very well and forcing Glenwood to take
most of their shots from outside of 25 yards out. We had to adjust our defense at halftime
because Glenwood was owning the middle of the field against us, creating too many shots. We
cut down their number of shots in the 2nd half and overtime with that adjustment. Offensively,
we had some great counters that led to breakaways and 1 on 1s. However, Glenwood’s
defense was so much faster than we are so they shut down all of our breakaways before we
could even get a shot off. We turned down some shots from 25-35 yards out that we needed to
take as shots were hard to get against their fast defense. I want to recognize Jimena Lupian,
Xochitl Arellano, Jocelyn Serrato, Janet Castillo, Leilany Morales, Rosy Segoviano, Libby Leon,
Estela Lupian, Hally Escobar, Giana Garcia, Mia Garcia, Nadia Medina and Karla Sanchez for
staying marked up in the midfield and defense to prevent Glenwood from getting any easy shots
against us. When Glenwood took shots on goal, Sam caught everything cleanly and didn’t allow
any goals on deflections or rebounds. The effort the girls played with today was tremendous
and the trust we had in our teammates to do her job, so we could focus on our job, earned the
shutout and a huge conference win. In the shootouts, our penalty kicks were taken with a lot of
power and confidence. Today was the signature win of my 3 years coaching the Lady
Monarchs”.
